Watch Case Sizes Explained: Finding Your Fit

Shoppers fixate on case diameter because it is the number brands advertise. In practice it is the least informative of the four measurements that determine fit.

The four measurements that matter

Diameter

The width of the case, excluding the crown. It sets the visual weight of the watch, but tells you nothing about how it sits on a narrow wrist.

Lug-to-lug

The distance from the tip of one lug to the tip of the other. This is the number that decides whether a watch overhangs your wrist. A 40 mm case with long lugs can wear larger than a 42 mm case with short ones.

Thickness

Governs how the watch sits under a cuff and how top-heavy it feels. Under 11 mm slips under most shirt cuffs. Over 14 mm starts catching.

Lug width

Determines which straps fit. 20 mm is the most common, which means the widest choice of aftermarket options.

Practical sizing guide

Wrist Diameter Max lug-to-lug
14–16 cm 34–38 mm 45 mm
16–18 cm 38–41 mm 48 mm
18–20 cm 40–43 mm 52 mm
20 cm+ 42–46 mm 55 mm

How to measure your wrist

Wrap a strip of paper or a soft tape around your wrist just below the wrist bone. Note the length in centimetres. For a bracelet watch, add roughly 1 cm of comfort allowance when comparing against spec sheets.

The overhang test

Put the watch on. If the lugs extend past the edges of your wrist when viewed from above, the case is too large regardless of the diameter figure. This single test catches most bad fits.

Why smaller is usually safer

Oversized watches photograph well and wear poorly. A watch that fits correctly looks intentional; one that overhangs looks borrowed. When in doubt, size down.

Every product page in our shop lists case dimensions, so you can check lug-to-lug before ordering.

Frequently asked questions

Is 42 mm too big?

Not inherently — it depends on lug-to-lug length and wrist size. On a 16 cm wrist a 42 mm case with long lugs will overhang; with short lugs it may sit perfectly.

What size watch for a small wrist?

34–38 mm with a lug-to-lug under 45 mm suits most wrists below 16 cm.

Does thickness matter for comfort?

Yes. A thick case catches on cuffs and feels top-heavy. Under 12 mm is comfortable for most wearers.
